Renamed items are italic in vanilla unless the name turns italic off.

EssentialsX, TAB and most Spigot/Paper plugins (1.16+).
Turns any text into a Minecraft RGB gradient and gives you the code for your plugin: &#rrggbb for EssentialsX and most Spigot/Paper plugins, MiniMessage for Paper and Velocity, {#rrggbb} for CMI, or a JSON text component for vanilla /tellraw. Hex colors work in Java Edition 1.16 and newer.
Every plugin reads colors its own way. Pick the row for whatever shows the text:
| Where the text goes | Format |
|---|---|
| EssentialsX (chat, nicknames, broadcasts) | &#rrggbb |
| TAB, and most Spigot/Paper plugins with hex support | &#rrggbb |
| Paper, Velocity, plugins that use MiniMessage | MiniMessage <gradient>

| CMI | {#rrggbb} |
| Older Spigot / BungeeCord plugins | &x&r&r&g&g&b&b |

Not sure? Try &#rrggbb first. If the codes show up as text, the plugin needs another format.
There is no gradient color code in the game. A gradient is one hex color per letter, blended between your colors, so Phoenix in &#rrggbb format becomes seven color codes. Spaces get no code, which keeps the output shorter. MiniMessage is the exception: Paper works out the colors from a single <gradient:#a:#b> tag.
In the & formats a color code clears bold, italic and the rest, so the generator repeats &l and the other format codes after every color. That is why bold gradients are longer.
Chat messages and commands typed in chat stop at 256 characters. Each letter of a hex gradient costs 9 characters in &#rrggbb and 15 in &x format, so a gradient of more than about 28 letters won't fit in one chat message. Config files, command blocks and MiniMessage <gradient> tags don't have that problem.
For a server list MOTD use the MOTD generator. For big on-screen titles, subtitles and the actionbar use the Title Generator.
Minecraft has no gradient code, so a gradient is written as one hex color per letter. Type your text here, pick two or more colors and copy the result in the format your plugin reads, for example &#rrggbb for EssentialsX or a MiniMessage <gradient> tag for Paper. Hex colors need Java Edition 1.16 or newer.
EssentialsX and TAB read &#rrggbb. Paper and Velocity (and plugins built on MiniMessage) read MiniMessage, where the <gradient> tag is the shortest option. CMI reads {#rrggbb}. Very old Spigot or BungeeCord plugins that only understand &x codes need the &x&r&r&g&g&b&b format.
LuckPerms only stores the prefix; your chat or tab plugin is what shows it, so copy the format that plugin reads. Put the prefix in quotes in the command, for example /lp group vip meta setprefix 100 "&#ffaa00V&#ff7700I&#ff4400P ".
Not on a vanilla server. The motd line in server.properties is read as legacy text with the 16 § colors, so the hex codes from this tool won't show as a gradient there. Use the MOTD generator on this site for server.properties, or a MOTD plugin that supports hex colors.
Vanilla Minecraft doesn't turn & codes into colors; a plugin has to do it. If the codes show as text, your plugin doesn't read that format (try another one from the list) or you lack its color permission. On a server without plugins, use the /tellraw command format instead.
A chat message or a command typed in chat can be at most 256 characters, and every hex code adds 8 or more characters per letter. The counter turns yellow above 256. Config files and command blocks take much longer text, and MiniMessage <gradient> keeps the output short.
No. Bedrock only has the 16 § colors and no hex colors, so gradients only show for Java Edition 1.16+ players.
Minecraft shows renamed items in italics unless the name turns italic off. In MiniMessage add <!italic> at the start, and in JSON add "italic":false. Many plugins that read & codes already turn it off for you.
