Customers click the sign. On a Buy sign a right-click buys, on a Sell sign a right-click sells, and on a Both sign a right-click buys while a left-click sells. Each click moves the Amount set on the shop, and on Premium sneaking and right-clicking trades a chosen amount. Sneaking and left-clicking shows the shop's owner, item, stock, room left and prices in chat instead of trading.
No permission is needed to trade on a player shop. The owner right-clicking their own sign opens its editor instead of trading.
A trade is refused, with a message saying why, when:
| Buying | Selling |
|---|---|
| The container does not hold the full amount. | The customer does not carry the full amount. |
| The customer's inventory has no room for it. | The container has no room for it. |
| The customer cannot afford the price. | The owner cannot afford the price. |
Both directions are also refused while player shops are turned off, when the sign has no item, when the item is on the Blocked Items list, when its currency is missing, and when the container behind it is gone. A shulker box shop never accepts shulker boxes. Experience, levels, item currencies and ExcellentEconomy can only pay or charge a player who is online, so a shop priced in one of them only trades while its owner is online. The same goes for an ender chest shop, whatever it is priced in.
Premium. Sneaking and right-clicking the sign asks how many items to trade instead of the shop's fixed Amount. On a Both sign a small menu first asks whether to buy or sell. The amount is typed in a dialog where the server supports one, otherwise in chat, and the customer has to stay within 8 blocks of the sign.
The price is shared out per item: 10 items on a shop selling 64 for 640 cost 100. Currencies that only use whole numbers, such as levels, round up what a buyer pays and round down what a seller gets. A shop paid in items only accepts amounts that come to a whole number of its payment item, and the prompt names the multiple to use. One trade can move at most Max Amount.
Premium. When a trade cannot go through in full, the part that can goes through and is charged for its share of the price. The customer is told they got fewer than they asked for.
| Buying | Selling |
|---|---|
| The container holds fewer than asked. | The container has room for fewer than offered. |
| The owner can only afford part of it. | |
| The customer's Player Limits allow fewer. | The customer's Player Limits allow fewer. |
A shop paid in items only trades the largest part that still comes to whole payment items. Everything else in the refusal table above still refuses the whole trade. Partial Trades turns this off.
Only the owner can break the sign, break the container, or open the container. Everyone else is told whose shop it is. Both halves of a double chest are covered. Staff can open the container too, except on an ender chest shop.
Items cannot be pulled out of the container by a hopper or any other block, and nobody but the owner can place a hopper against it. Explosions, fire and pistons leave the sign and both halves of the container alone.
A player with phoenixshop.sign.admin gets the same access as the owner, so staff can open or remove any player shop.
Breaking the container the sign is on removes the shop and breaks its sign as well, since the sign has nothing left to trade out of. Breaking the half added later to make a double chest only turns the shop back into a single chest.
The owner is messaged after every trade on one of their signs, with the customer, the amount, the item and the price.
When the owner is offline, the notices wait and are delivered the next time they join. Repeated trades by the same customer in the same direction are merged into one line with the totals added up, so twelve sales by one player read as a single notice. Each owner keeps at most 20 waiting notices across all of their signs, and the oldest are dropped first.
An online owner is also told when a customer finds the shop out of stock, or finds the container too full to sell into, at most once every 10 minutes per shop.
/pshop notify turns all of these off for the player running it, and running it again turns them back on. Trades made while they are off are not queued.
